What Is LTL Shipping
Less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping is freight transportation for shipments that don’t require a full trailer. Before entering the LTL network, carriers palletize freight so it can share space with other shippers on single semi-trailers. You only pay for the portion of the trailer you actually use.
Every LTL shipment moves according to a few core factors. Freight class is based on the shipment’s density, value, and how easily it stows next to other freight. Weight and dimensions combine with class to set the rate. Origin, destination, and lane matter too, since LTL carriers move freight through a network of terminals rather than direct point to point like a full truckload.
Freight for is classified under the NMFC® system. The NMFC® Process standardizes how LTL freight is identified, classified, priced, and handled across North America. Getting the classification right matters. Misclassified freight is one of the most common causes of rate disputes and delivery delays, which is why having a transportation specialist manage this step can save time, money, and headaches.
LTL vs. FTL vs. Volume LTL, which one do you need?
The table below offers a quick way to match your shipment to the right service.
| Best for | |
|---|---|
| LTL | Palletized freight that doesn't fill a trailer, typically under 15,000 lbs or a handful of pallets |
| FTL (Full Truckload) | FTL freight, which are shipments large enough to fill or dedicate a full trailer |
| Volume LTL / Partial Truckload | Not quite a full truckload. These are shipments that are partial loads but too large for standard LTL pricing. They typically consist of 6 or more pallets |
If your shipment needs guaranteed transit time rather than the most cost-efficient option, our Expedited Freight page covers Vesta’s expedited services.
Why Vesta
Why Shippers Choose Vesta for LTL
Vesta Freight has successfully delivered LTL shipments since our founding with roughly 10,000 LTL shipments to date. We keep our LTL rates competitive with major national transportation companies, without asking you to manage the relationship across a dozen different carrier portals.
That’s the core of what we do differently: we’re your single point of contact. Instead of chasing down tracking numbers, calling multiple carrier service departments, or trying to figure out who to call when something goes wrong, you call us. We manage the shipment from pickup through delivery and resolve issues before they become your problem.
Communication
You get a dedicated broker who’s proactive, not reactive.
Technology
You receive updates and real time visibility on your load.
Carrier security
We don’t hand your freight to just anyone. Every carrier in our network is vetted before they touch your shipment.
LTL Shipping Built for Your Industry
- Vesta Freight works with shippers across nearly every industry. If you've got palletized freight that needs to move reliably, we can broker it, regardless of what you make or sell.
Steel & glass manufacturing
Heavy, dense, and easily damaged, steel and glass demand the right equipment and careful handling. We move coils, plate, sheet, and fragile glass loads with carriers who know how to secure and protect them.
Automotive & trailers
From parts and components to finished trailers and rolling stock, we keep automotive supply chains moving on time, with the flatbed, enclosed, and specialized capacity this fast-paced industry runs on.
Specialty equipment
High-value, oversized, or sensitive machinery needs more than an open trailer. We match specialty equipment to carriers equipped to load, secure, and deliver it safely, wherever it needs to go.
Servers & data centers
Server racks and data-center hardware are expensive, delicate, and time-critical. We handle these shipments with air-ride equipment, careful scheduling, and the discretion high-value technology freight requires.
Farm & agriculture
Seasonal, bulky, and often time-sensitive, agricultural freight keeps operations running. From equipment to inputs to harvested goods, we deliver the capacity farmers and ag businesses depend on when timing matters most.
Architectural & construction
Building materials, structural components, and jobsite equipment have to arrive on schedule to keep projects on track. We coordinate flatbed, heavy-haul, and oversized moves that meet tight construction timelines.
If your industry isn’t listed here, that doesn’t mean we’re not a fit. It just means these are where we’ve moved the most freight and know the patterns best.
